Belleville washers are used to solve fastening problems related to vibration, thermal expansion, fastener relaxation and bolt creep. Disc washers prevent fasteners from vibrating loose, dampening and absorbing shock that could threaten the integrity of a tightened joint. Unlike disc washers that can be loaded continuously, intermittently or dynamically, Belleville washers are used for static applications. Beveled washers are angled and increase the surface area and better distributing the fastener’s load
SAE washers are generally thinner than its United States Standard flat washer that meet the engineering requirements for numerous industrial applications. SAE fasteners are typically used in the mobility industries, such as automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicles. SAE washers are produced to comply with Society of Automotive Engineers specifications. Fender washers are also thinner washers and named after their primary used on automotive fenders. They spread the load across a wide body with a small hole.
Finishing washers are meant to be used with countersunk screws to keep the head of the screw from sinking into the surface of a softer fastening material. By distributing the load over a larger area, it increases the bearing surface. Countersunk finishing washers are ideal for woodworking, metalworking and construction applications when a smooth or level finish is needed. Both countersunk and regular finishing washers work well when the material being attached is thin or fragile and needs additional support.
Lock washers are used in nut and bolt applications. The washer is placed under the threaded fastener and tightening of the nut applies spring tension to keep the fastener from vibrating lose. Lock washers provide torque beneath an ordinary fastener to prevent nuts and bolts from turning, slipping or coming loose due to vibration or movement. Torque washers are also used to prevent loosening but have a square cut hole that fits over the square shoulder of a carriage bolt to prevent loosening and slippage as a tooth lock washer.
