When fasteners are exposed to brutal outdoor environments, standard plating is often not enough to prevent rapid rusting. Hot-dip galvanizing is a heavy-duty coating process that involves fully immersing steel fasteners into a bath of molten zinc. This process causes the zinc to react with the iron in the steel, forming a tightly bonded alloy where the top layer is 100 percent pure zinc.

Because hot-dip galvanizing applies the thickest possible protective coating to the metal, hot-dipped galvanized bolts are not compatible with standard bare-metal or zinc-plated nuts.
To accommodate the added thickness of the zinc layer on the bolt's threads, galvanized nuts must be tapped slightly larger (oversized) than standard nuts. Always ensure you are pairing galvanized bolts with specifically tapped galvanized nuts to prevent thread binding and assembly failure.

While both processes use zinc to protect the base metal, standard zinc plating (electroplating) applies a very thin layer of zinc primarily for indoor or light-duty use. Hot-dip galvanizing immerses the steel in molten zinc, creating a much thicker, metallurgically bonded layer designed specifically for heavy-duty, long-term outdoor exposure.
Zinc is highly reactive. When a galvanized fastener is scratched deeply enough to expose the bare steel underneath, the surrounding zinc will act as a sacrificial anode. It will actively oxidize and corrode instead of the steel, preventing rust from compromising the structural integrity of the bolt.
It is not recommended. Aside from the thread tolerance issues (galvanized threads are thicker), mixing dissimilar metals like galvanized steel and stainless steel can cause galvanic corrosion, which accelerates the degradation of the zinc coating. Always pair galvanized bolts with galvanized nuts.
