Zinc is a commonly used coating or plating for fasteners that offers excellent rust and corrosion resistance at a low cost. Like cadmium, zinc protects the substrate by providing a thin, protective barrier. The zinc is preferentially corroded when the coating is damaged or if the substrate is exposed to the environment from scratches or punctures.
